Mediator and Serologic Foundations era
Henry H. Dale helped establish histamine as the principal mediator of allergic vascular and mucosal responses, shaping mediator-centered biology in the 1930–1974 era. Daniel Bovet's antihistamines in the 1940s–1950s provided the first effective pharmacologic control of allergic symptoms. Teruko Ishizaka and Kimish Ishizaka, in 1966, identified IgE as the antibody class driving immediate hypersensitivity, underpinning serologic assays of atopy. Gell and Coombs's 1963 hypersensitivity classification organized mechanistic thinking and guided diagnostic and therapeutic strategies across serology, skin testing, and immunotherapy.
